Embracing and Encouraging People with Lyme Disease

According to Gerrardstown resident Susan Wetzel, lyme disease can be a very lonely and misunderstood disease. Many times people with lyme disease can look healthy, but are really seriously ill.

Wetzel and her family, most of whom have lyme disease, started the Panhandle Lyme Disease Support Group to provide a place of understanding for people with lyme disease to go. (more…)

Area man gets an updated semi thanks to TV show

MARBLE HILL, Mo.
…Russell contracted Lyme disease from a deer tick near his home just before the Fourth of July in 1999. “The first two years were pretty rough,” he said. “It can feel like an extreme case of fatigue, and then I have really bad joint pains.”

Russell’s Springfield, Mo., doctor is working to get him in remission with heavy doses of antibiotics, but he can suffer from the disease for the rest of his life… (more…)

Long-Term Antibiotics Won?t Fight Lyme Disease

Therapy beyond one month may even be hazardous, experts say

Long-term antibiotic treatment of people with Lyme disease has not proven to be effective, and use of the drugs for more than four weeks may even be dangerous, according to new expert guidelines.

The updated Lyme disease diagnosis and treatment guidelines were released by the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA).

The guidelines also note that 95 percent of cases of Lyme disease are cured within 10 to 28 days of treatment with oral antibiotics. (more…)

Expert discusses Lyme disease

Speaking at York Hospital, he said ‘two worlds’ disagree on treatment.

Dr. Jerry Green, a Connecticut rheumatologist, decided to check his luggage that contained eight vials of dead ticks when he boarded a plane for a trip to York County.

He didn’t want problems with airport security before his presentation on Lyme disease Thursday morning at York Hospital.

Likely, many doctors in attendance had seen some of the ticks before and treated patients with Lyme disease.

Yet in the United States, diagnosis and treatment continues to be controversial, Green said. (more…)
